"O Death, Where Is Thy Sting?..."

1 Cor. 15:55-57

  1. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
  2. The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
  3. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Commentary

For those whose portion is in this life, death is a fearful and uncertain prospect, but for all who belong to Jesus, it holds no terror. The sting of death is sin, Paul tells us, and the strength of sin is the law. We abide in Him who fulfilled all the law through his life and shed his Blood for our sin. At the Judgment, the Judge Himself will be our advocate and we need fear no condemnation. Neither death, nor life, nor any other creature can separate us from the love of Christ (Rom. 8:38-39). Our bodies may wear out, grow old, and die; they may be buried in the ground, but we will live on, through the power of the One who conquered death. Where is the sting of death? For the believer it has none, for it is simply the beginning of a new and glorious life. "Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
