In all of Scripture, we find few characters who were less popular or more outnumbered than Jeremiah. Destined to bring bad news his whole life, the prophet had exactly two friends. Virtually everyone else, from the king to Jeremiah's own family members, wished he were dead (Jer. 12:6). Not a few actively tried to kill him. No wonder, then, that God started off his servant with this unusual promise: "They shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail." Even when powerful enemies threw Jeremiah into the worst dungeon they could find, God saw to it that he came out alive. He still had a message to bring from the Lord, and nothing could stop him until his work was done.
If you are facing a battle today, it doesn't matter how many people are on your side. It only matters whether you are on God's side. His servants are sometimes lonely and unpopular. They are frequently persecuted and even killed (2 Tim. 3:12). But in the final analysis, they can never be truly defeated.
Jesus Christ will triumph in the end. Every knee will bow to Him. To those who endured He will give a crown of life, and the commendation that makes all the struggle worthwhile: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant... enter thou into the joy of thy Lord" (Mat. 25:21).
