Scripture Song of Psalm 1:1-3

“Blessed Is The Man”

Commentary on Psalm 1:1-3

by Living Faith Fellowship

In John Bunyan's Pilgrims' Progress, one of the first characters met by Christian is the affable and smooth-talking Mr. Worldly Wiseman. His reasonable advice quickly steers Christian out of the path, with near-fatal consequences.

In our own journey to the "Celestial City," we have to contend with more than just one Worldly Wiseman; the world is full of them, and they are advising us daily on every question, whether we realize it or not. Having rejected the standard of God, the world has developed a standard of its own. The moment we accept this false standard in any area, we are "walking in the counsel of the ungodly," and will soon find ourselves "standing in the way of sinners" far from the plan of God.

The herd instinct is a powerful force in the human psyche. When countless thousands around you subscribe to a particular way of thinking and living, it's difficult to avoid being subtly influenced and undermined by sheer force of numbers. The only way to keep from being "conformed to this world," the Bible says, is to be "transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom. 12:2). Our minds are renewed by staying in the Word of God - reading it regularly with a humble and seeking heart, and meditating on it day and night.

When we draw our thoughts from God's Word, our roots tap into the pure water of his Spirit instead of the brackish scum of worldly wisdom. We become secure, strong, and fruitful - able to know what is the "good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

  1. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
  2. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
  3. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
