Scripture Song of Matthew 17:20

“If Ye Have Faith As A Grain Of Mustard Seed”

Commentary on Matthew 17:20

by Living Faith Fellowship

Faith is a force so powerful that even the smallest measure of it can move mountains, and so essential that we cannot please God without it (Heb. 11:6). As Jesus illustrated in the parable of the talents (Matt. 25:14-30), we are all given a portion of this faith. What we do with it is up to us.

The two good servants in the parable increased their master's money by trading. We can increase our faith by reading God's Word (Rom. 10:17) and then stepping out in obedience to act upon it (Jas. 1:22). Abraham believed God, the Bible tells us, and it was accounted to him for righteousness (Gal. 3:6). Just as importantly, Abraham obeyed God. Unaccompanied by obedience, his faith would have been fruitless (Jas. 2:21-23).

True faith is not forcing oneself to "believe till it hurts." True faith is the outworking of an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ, a relationship so close that we no longer have our own will. If we "speak to the mountain" from this position, that mountain has no choice but to obey - for it is really Jesus, the Creator and Lord of all, who is speaking through our faith.

All things are possible with God. Hearts can be changed, situations turned, crooked things made straight, broken things made whole. Only believe.
