Scripture Song of Luke 21:36

“Watch Ye Therefore And Pray Always”

Commentary on Luke 21:36

by Living Faith Fellowship

In the Christian literary classic Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan tells of a place called the Enchanted Ground. Pilgrims passing through it on their way to the Celestial City would find themselves overcome by a powerful desire to lie down and sleep, and those who succumbed would fall quickly into the hands of the enemy. The tale is an allegory, but the similar traps set by our adversary for the followers of Christ are all too real. Those of us living in the 21st-century western world are offered every kind of entertainment and distraction, both secular and religious, intended to dull our senses and lull us to sleep.

Jesus gave his disciples the antidote for this kind of seductive piping by the world: "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation." (Matt. 26:41) God's coming judgment is as real and as certain as it was in Noah's day, and only through the righteousness of Jesus Christ can we be accounted worthy to escape it. Let us buy oil to keep our lamps burning brightly (Matt. 25:4), and not be found sleeping when our Lord returns. "Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching" (Luke 12:37).
